V.P. Cheney violated the Endangered Species Act?

June 30th, 2007

The Portland Oregonian, commenting on a Friday article in the Washington Post about Vice President Dick Cheney, opined that Cheney might have violated the Endangered Species Act when he interfered with Department of Interior decisions about salmon in the Klamath Basin in Oregon and Washington.  Apparently, after Cheney’s interventions, Interior changed its earlier decision about water releases and went against its own scientific information to allow water to be released for irrigation.  That decision led in 2002 to the largest kill off of adult salmon in modern history.  The kill has seriously impacted tribal treaty fishing rights and led to the biggest commercial fishing closure in our history.

The House Resource Committee is going to investigate the issue.

If only that was his worst felonious act as VP, but alas, as Wampum denotes http://wampum.wabanaki.net/vault/2007/06/003805.html, his interference (read obstruction of justice) in the Mineral Management robbery at Interior is equally if not more impeachable. Excuse me if I don’t hold my breath over a House investigation.
