American Indians descended from single group?
May 16th, 2009
A study published in the May issue of Molecular Biology and Evolution claims all modern-day Native people descend from a single group.
Researchers examined the DNA from 20 Native groups in the U.S., Canada, Greenland, Central America and South America. They found a common genetic marker in all of the populations.
The genetic marker was not found in the DNA of 31 modern-day Asian groups, leading researchers to conclude that the ancestors of modern-day Native people lived in isolation before expanding to the Americas. The study estimates the most recent common ancestor lived somewhere between 7,325 and 39,900 years ago.
The marker was found in two Native groups in Western Siberia, in Russia, that are closely linked to Alaska Natives.

It’s interesting, the things that they are determining now because of DNA testing.

“The marker was found in two Native groups in Western Siberia, in Russia, that are closely linked to Alaska Natives.”
I guess it gives a whole new meaning to ‘all of my relations!’ he he
Well, it’s good that studies are always ongoing but it’s always not conclusive especially this study/theory.
I’ve had so many people tell me (non Natives) – your people came from Asia. Rude? Yeah. Because of most Americans in general lack history basics of their own country. So it’s convenient or arrogant for them to say we came from Asia. Despite the reality, that various tribes have been here waaaayyyy before the Lost European Man Arrived and totally ignoring the fact that each tribe have their own genesis story (or creation beliefs) that exists/existed.

Asians were rather proud to have indigenous Americans be a part of their diaspora when that was the common belief. The more I learned about pre-1700′s North and South American cultures the more I respected and revered them, found unusual commonalities with some Asian ways and beliefs, and took a little bit of pride in the albeit distant association. Too bad it didn’t last, but I do applaud the fact that there is ongoing DNA research – whatever the results, it’s always good to know more about ones history.

To Christine that doesnt know jack about history. Various tribes have been here before “lost” european men arrived, but that is beyond the point of saying where native americans came from. Your societal and religious beliefs dont mean anything when compared to science. Indians came from mostly from asia via bering straight. indians are not some special race compared to others. Saying your from asia isnt rude you ignorant woman, like it offends me when people go are you of asian descent? So next argument is, if native americans came from asia, where is my share of your casino profits?

So Jason once again shows the same indifference and quite paternalistic attitude the forebears of modern anthropologists showed to American Indians when they dissected everything they wanted to know about Indian history and customs. Bravo, it seems little has changed among mainstream Americans when it comes to their dealings with the original peoples. Given historical relations between Indians and non-Indians, it is rude to say they’re from Asia but then most nons don’t know jack about Indian issues to begin with. Indians were here since time immemorial. Deal with it. Oh, and no profits for you. You aren’t a skin.

There certainly is a lot of heated discussion about a rather mundane topic. But overall isn’t it more interesting to learn these people came from a single location? I would like to know, maybe the author can speak to when this migration would have taken place? (I’m no historian).
