Native Americans to protest work at Glen Cove Shellmound

Native American activits are protesting construction at the Glen Cove Shellmound area.

They have told the city to expect the Native American community and supporters to chain themselves to trees or otherwise “peacefully but effectively seek to block” the work.

Apparently, the Vallejo Inter-Tribal Council will help fight the Greater Vallejo Recreation District’s (GVRD) plans to “desecrate this sacred ancient burial site.”

Located along the Carquinez Straits, Glen Cove was an important Native American village, cultural and burial site for thousands of years, and remains a spiritually important area to local Native peoples.

GVRD general manager Shane McAffee said his agency seeks only to improve the area, by “removing two old buildings, installing some picnic tables, a small parking lot and restrooms and restoring natural vegetation.”

Glen Cove is also environmentally sensitive due the wetlands and a fresh water creek.
