Hoopa Valley Tribe shuts down weekly newspaper

In an ominous move, on July 1, the Hoopa Valley Tribe in Northern California shut down its weekly newspaper, The Two Rivers Tribune, citing financial problems and recent editorial decisions.

The papers interim managing editor disputed the tribal claims and stated that the paper was profitable last year and on track to make money again in 2011.

The tribal council chairman cited a cost to the tribe of $189,000 over the past three years and criticized recent article that he said promoted drugs.

An ex-managing editor at the tribal lpaper and current vice-chairman of the tribal council stated, according to News From Indian Country: “It’s not exactly like a paper on the outside. It’s a tribal paper, and there are a lot of politics involved.”
