Idaho defacers of pictographs go to prison
July 27th, 2012
I have noted many times how federal judges have been extremely reluctant to send antiquity thieves and persons who deface ancient Indian pictographs and petroglyphs to prison.
Thus, to be fair I need to blog that U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge sentenced two Idaho men to prison for defacing ancient Native American pictographs near Hell's Gate State Park. One man received a three year sentence, and the other received a four month sentence. A third person was to be sentenced in June. The Oregonian, March, 3, 2012, at B2.
They spray painted over drawings of animals and geometric shapes that are 2,500 years.

The three men were also fined $100,000 to cover the costs of restoration. The petroglyphs are beautiful and full of strength still, despite the vandals.
