Lawyers appealing decision upholding Kamehameha schools for Native Hawaiians only
March 23rd, 2007
Attorneys for a white student who was excluded from admission at a Native Hawaiian private school are appealing the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. In early March, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, by an 8-7 vote, upheld the policy of the Kamehaheha schools to give admission preferences to Native Hawaiians. Â
Kamehameha was established under the 1883 will of Hawaiian Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. She directed that some of her assets were to used to operate a school for Native Hawaiians to try to counteract the historic disadvantages Hawaiians were facing.

As soon as one student of Non-Hawiian Aboriginal descent is not given priority over the mainstream population concerning the attendance of this private school then precidence will be set for a quick journey down a long slippery slope. This school was developed so the Aboriginal descendants of Hawaii would not be bulldozed under by future generations.
If that Boy and his parents really feel that this is the best place for there son, then maybe the parents should start some sort of action to ensure that a school of this quality is available for their children is made available in their own community.
