Libby Trial Exhibits and Trial Blogs

January 25th, 2007

The case of US v I. Lewis (”Scooter”) Libby began this week. Public interest in Libby’s trial on charges of perjury, false statement, and obstruction of justice relating to the Valerie Plame investigation are high, and so the U.S. Department of Justice and a few innovative bloggers/reporters are providing these related services:

Trial Exhibits

The office of Special Counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald is providing access to each day’s trial exhibits as they are introduced at http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/iln/osc/

Due to public interest in this case, the Department of Justice is releasing the government exhibits in the format admitted in the court. The Department recognizes that these documents are in some cases not in an accessible format.

All exhibits so far have been in PDF and/or Text format. Also at the Special Counsel’s site are links to most other court documents, including the indictment, pretrial motions, and supporting affidavits.

Trial Blogs & News

A few bloggers and reporters are providing “gavel-to-gavel” coverage of the Libby trial.

The Scooter Libby Trial
Media Bloggers Association
The Media Bloggers Assocation, “a nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting, protecting and educating its members,” has been credentialed to cover the Libby trial. Posts of their members are being aggregated at their Scooter Libby Trial site.

Libby Live Trial Blog
Firedoglake
Bloggers from this liberal political blog are in the courtroom and have been providing invaluable coverage and analysis. Occasional posts in the blog are not trial-related, but on days the court is in session it is easy to spot the trial posts.

Capital Games Trial Coverage
The Nation
David Corn, Washington Editor of The Nation, is providing day-by-day accounts of the trial at his blog.

Slate’s Libby Trial Coverage
The online newsmagazine Slate offers in-depth coverage of the trial by reporters Dahlia Lithwick and John Dickerson.
