A Taxonomy of Legal Blogs
March 30th, 20063L Epiphany is a blog created by Moritz College of Law 3L Ian Best “to study the growing phenomenon of legal blogs.” We’ve recently noted two censuses of academic legal blogs. 3L Epiphany takes the tracking of legal blogs to a whole new level. As you’ll see, the results of Best’s efforts have just been released, and are well worth a visit.
A Taxonomy of Legal Blogs is an impressive organization of legal blogs. All ‘blawgs’ are assigned to one or more of eight broad categories, each of which is further divided by sub-categories.
The lead categories of legal blogs:
- General Blogs
- Blogs Categorized by Legal Specialty
- Blogs Categorized by Law or Legal Event
- Blogs Categorized by Jurisdictional Scope
- Blogs Categorized by Author/Publisher
- Blogs Categorized by Number of Contributors
- Miscellaneous Blogs Categorized by Topic
- Collections of Legal Blogs
This is a brave venture. Keeping up on new blogs, discontinued blogs, name changes, etc is no small task. Heck, go visit one of our favorite sections of 3L Epiphany, Blogs Not Included — made up of Blogs Omitted from My Taxonomy (yes, including Jack Bog’s Blog) and Inactive Legal Blogs — to get a sense of the temporal nature of blogs and the task ahead of 3L Epiphany.
Even if this taxonomy turn out to be short-lived, it provides a wonderful snapshot of the legal blogosphere at this point in time, and a template we can all rely on.
