August 25th, 2006First year orientation was completed today here at Lewis & Clark Law School. Many tips for a successful first year were shared, both formally and informally.
Here are sources for a few other tips and hard-learned lessons that might come in helpful the next few days, weeks and months:

By Orin Kerr of George Washington University Law School, this article helps explain the structure of judicial opinions, provides tips for reading and briefing them, and talks about why law schools use the case method. - Shelley’s Helpful Tips for the First Semester of Law School
L&C Law’s own alum, Shelley Chrystal Mactyre, jumps in with this helpful list (included not just because of tip number 8…). - Law School Terminology
A quite useful little glossary of all those terms you will soon be hearing quite a bit. Just skip those Minnesota-specific entries. We’ll add in some for clouds, lattes and micros in our own version later. Lest you 2Ls feel neglected, please enjoy Advice for Rising 2L’s, from the excellent 3L Epiphany.
Finally, don’t forget two of our local favorites: (1) please feel free to rely on your local law librarian for help, a good ear, and where to find a good bike, microbrew, or park; and (2) be sure to take time for yourself and your family.
