In this webcast, John G. Roberts, Jr., the17th Chief Justice of the United States, joined Judge Anna Brown of the U.S. District Court for Oregon and Judge Diarmuid O'Scannlain of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to judge the inaugural Environmental Law Moot Court Advocate of the Year competition for Lewis & Clark Law School.
Third-year law students Maggie Hall, Meredith Price, and Andy Erickson, the same members who were in the final round at the national competition earlier in the year, argued three sides of a fictional Clean Water Act case (see "Resources" below for the case). The case involved a golf course developer (who dredged in a wetland and built an island green in a pond), a homeowners association (whose flood risk rose as a result of the development), and also the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Hall argued for the homeowners' right to sue under the Clean Water Act, Price represented the developers and Erickson represented the EPA.
Meredith emerged the winner but all three were praised by Judge O'Scannlain when he said that they "would be among the top echelon of attorneys we hear from."
Dean Robert Klonoff introduced the members of the bench and Professor Craig Johnston, who coached the team members for the national competition, also spoke.
Prior to the competition, Chief Justice Roberts made surprise visits to three first year Legal Analysis and Writing classrooms. Dean Klonoff provided names and pictures to the Chief Justice so he could address students by name, a tactic that caught the students off-guard. However, Dean Klonoff also did not inform Professors Steve Johansen, Aliza Kaplan, and Sandy Patrick that he would be visiting their classrooms so they were as suprised as the students.
