Psychologist Chris Wilson will provide an overview of “Trauma & the Brain for Attorneys.” Attorneys, regardless of whether they practice criminal law, family law, employment law, tort law, or wills & estates, will encounter clients who either disclose a history of trauma or appear to have symptoms of a history of trauma.

While understanding trauma and neurobiology can seem daunting, using a concept called “the brain in your fist,” Dr. Wilson will present a way of looking at our brains’ response to trauma that non-mental health professionals appreciate for its simplicity. After viewing this podcast, law students will better understand how the brain responds to trauma so that when they are attorneys they can work effectively with victims of trauma.

Sponsored by the National Crime Victim Law Institute and Crime Victims’ Rights Alliance with an introduction by Meg Garvin

In this podcast, the International Law Society hosts Joseph McMillan of Perkins Coie who talks about the case “U.S. v. Hamdan.” The legal basis for the challenge to military commissions advanced by counsel for former Guantanamo detainee Salim Hamdan culminated in the Supreme Court’s 2006 decision, Hamdan v. Rumsfeld.

From the New York Times:

In June 2006, his case was at the heart of the Supreme Court decision that repudiated the Bush administration’s plan to put Guantánamo detainees on trial before military commissions, ruling broadly that the commissions were unauthorized by federal statute and violated international law.

Mr. Hamdan became the first person in decades to face an American war crimes trial. On Aug. 6, 2008, a military commission convicted him of providing material support for terrorism. Mr. Hamdan was given what amounted to a four-month sentence by a military jury. A military judge gave him credit for at least the 61 months he was held after being charged, reducing his sentence to a matter of months.

He also describes Mr. Hamdan’s 2008 trial by military commission at Guantanamo, and certain features of current detainee policy.

This event was co-sponsored by the National Lawyers Guild Student Group.

In this podcast, join the National Lawyers Guild panel looking at substantive law topics from a social justice perspective.

Elden Rosenthal (Rosenthal Greene & Devlin) practices personal injury and civil rights law and has won substantial verdicts and settlements for clients injured in automobile accidents, by defective products, by medical and nursing home malpractice, by sexual misconduct, and in numerous other ways. In 2006, Mr. Rosenthal made national headlines for his work as co-counsel in settling claims on behalf of Oregon attorney Brandon Mayfield against the FBI.

He discusses how he uses tort law in his daily work, the notion of law as a tool for social change, and how we can pursue progressive work using the substantive law.

The Global Law Program proudly welcomed Professor Anita Ramasastry as the Spring 2012 Global Law Lecturer. Her talk is on “The Future of Corporate Liability for Human Rights Violations in the United States: Kiobel, the Ruggie Framework and other Emerging Trends.”

This is a topic of current interest: the potential liability of corporations for human rights violations. She discusses recent cases in U.S. courts against corporations in connection with alleged human rights abuses, highlights a circuit split on the question of whether corporations (rather than individuals or States) can violate international law, and considers how the U.S. Supreme Court could resolve that question in a case in which it recently granted cert. Prof. Ramasastry also discusses other recent legal developments bearing on corporate social responsibility and human rights.

Prof. Ramasastry is the D. Wayne & Anne Gittinger Professor of Law at the University of Washington Law School. She is introduced by Professor George Foster of Lewis & Clark Law School.

This program qualified for 1 General MCLE Credit in Oregon.
