Network Access Easy as 1, 2, 3

Starting Sept. 13 every computer using Windows on campus will be checked for critical Windows updates and anti-virus software before gaining access to the network. SmartEnforcer, a small program you download, will check your laptop each time you connect to the Lewis & Clark servers.

If you don't have the latest Windows or anti-virus updates, SmartEnforcer will take you to a web page with links and instructions for downloading and installing the updates. Using an Apple or Linux operating system? No problem - at this time there is no SmartEnforcer client that you need download.

Getting your Windows laptop ready for the September 13 SmartEnforcer rollout is as easy as 1, 2, 3:

  1. Update Windows. If you haven't updated lately, you may need to allow Microsoft to install their update software onto your computer. Select "Custom install" and then select "Review other updates." Install all "high priority updates." You do not need to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 at this time.
  2. Install McAfee VirusScan for the free anti-virus software. To keep McAfee updated follow these instructions (pdf) . You may also use Norton, but it is not provided free of charge.
  3. Download and Install SmartEnforcer (starting Sept. 13):
On September 13th, after you first launch a browser program and login as usual you will be prompted to install SmartEnforcer onto your computer. Follow the instructions (click the link - click Open - click Next three times to install - then login again using your email name and password).

That's it. From now on, after you login the computer will be scanned to ensure that you have current operating system patches and anti-virus software. If you do not pass the SmartEnforcer validation test you will be directed to a site for downloading the required software and updates.

If Computing Services assisted you with steps 1 and 2 you must still complete step 3 once SmartEnforcer is implemented. You will need to keep your computer updated to continue to have Internet access. If you want to verify that your computer is configured correctly before September 13th, you can test it from the Undergraduate campus.

If you have any questions, please schedule an appointment with the Lab Assistant at the computer lab in Wood Hall. The majority of problems Computing Services is seeing are not from the updates but rather from the side-effect of spyware and adware. These programs get loaded onto your computer when you click on malicious pop-ups (not all pop-ups are malicious) or as a result of downloading programs (such as KaZaA) that contain malicious software. Removal of these programs may require reformatting your entire computer. Please practice safe surfing.
