Food for Fines, April 21 – May 15

April 18th, 2008

Got fines? Then clear out your fines and your conscience with our annual Food for Fines program.

Between April 21 and May 15 we will waive your fines if you bring in an equivalent amount of non-perishable nutritious food. If your fine is $50.00 or more, you can purchase a gift card from Fred Meyer for the equivalent amount of your fines.

All food and gift cards go to the Raphael House, a shelter for at-risk children and women in Portland. Raphael House suggests the following food items for donations:

  • Boxed meals i.e. pasta and rice mixes
  • Granola bars and cereal bars
  • Canned meals i.e. spaghettios, raviolis, chili, stew
  • Canned meats
  • Ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard
  • Soup – any kind
  • Juice – any kind
  • Jam – fruit jams of any kind
  • Cocoa, coffee, herbal tea
  • Cereal
  • Cake and frosting mixes
  • Jello and pudding mixes
  • Salsa – hot and mild

Please bring food, gift cards or money to the circulation desk of the law library. Not sure of the need? You can check your library record online for any accrued fines.

Watch That Jacket (and Keys. And Wallet…)

April 8th, 2008

Sorry folks, but there has been a run of jackets taken from both the Boley and Watzek libraries of late. Campus security is well aware of the problem and doing what they can, but unattended coats are easy to grab without drawing much suspicion.

Remember, the library, the Law School campus, and Lewis & Clark College as a whole are open to the public most hours of the day. While campus security works to limit the presence of bad-doers on campus, we encourage you to take a few steps to keep your valuables safe:

  • Don’t leave anything valuable unattended. Even if leaving your desk for a few minutes grab your purse, coat and backpack, or at the very least leave them with a friend
  • Do not leave your wallet or keys or phone in your jacket pocket.
  • If you use a laptop, be sure to lock it to your desk at all times. We’ve noted a number of laptops left unattended in study cubicles in the reading room and in Wood Hall. Inexpensive cables are available at the L&C Computer Showroom on the College campus.

We have a wonderful campus, but it is open to the public and it appears that opportunistic thieves have discovered our libraries. Items left unattended for even short periods of time are easy to grab. Use these basic rules – lock your computer with a cable, keep your wallet and keys on you, take your jacket when you leave your desk – and you can deny these ‘criminal elements’ their opportunity to ruin your day.

4/3: Legal Research for Summer Clerks

April 3rd, 2008

Be sure to stop by Classroom 1 at Noon, today (Thursday, April 3) for the Career Services program, Legal Research Strategies: What You Need to Know to Succeed in Your Summer Clerking Job.

Guest speakers Laurie Daley, Law Librarian at Bullivant Houser Bailey, PC, Dorene Smith, Law Librarian at Ater Wynne, and Tami Gierloff, Associate Librarian here at the Boley Law Library will tell you all you need to know about legal research for your summer law firm (or public interest or non-profit) clerking job.

Want to make a good impression on your new summer employer?

If you’re a first or second year student, come learn about efficient and effective legal research techniques!

In this session two Portland law firm librarians will provide valuable “insider” information on the reality of performing legal research in law firms. Find out which resources are available, gain practical advice about time-management and cost-efficient searching and discover what former law clerks wish they had known before their clerkships began.
