How to Open PDFs in Westlaw

August 29th, 2008

Westlaw is a wonderful resource, but printing and opening PDFs on it are a real pain. Now it turns out that opening PDFs on Westlaw using Internet Explorer 7 (we’ll go with IE7 from here on) is often defeated by a default setting in the browser.

Here is how to fix that problem once and for all, followed by the standard settings that allow you to print from Westlaw.

1. Fixing PDF Problem in IE7

The Problem: When clicking a “View Westlaw Reporter Image (pdf)” link in a document – which should give you a digital image of the original document – the screen flashes but nothing happens.

The Solution:

  • Click Internet Options
  • Choose Security Tab
  • Choose Custom Level
  • Under the heading Downloads (about halfway down list), click Enable below the subheading Automatic prompting for file downloads
  • Click OK. At next screen, click OK again.

2. Settings to Allow Westlaw Printing & Downloading

These have been required for a couple of years now for using Westlaw’s print and download buttons. If you haven’t set them before or you are having problems getting print or download to work, give these a try:

  1. Pop-Up Blocker (in browser)
Add westlaw.com to your browser’s pop-up blocker exemption list. Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari all have such lists. Check at the computer lab helpdesk if you need any assistance finding it.
  2. Google or Yahoo Pop-Up Blocker (in browser toolbar)
Lots of people use the Google or Yahoo toolbars. Not only handy for searching, but they also provide additional (probably unnecessary) pop-up blocking. You’ll also need to have that turned off. Generally, browse to lawschool.westlaw.com, then click on on the ‘pop-up blocked’ icon in the toolbar to allow Westlaw. You can also just turn off that pop-up blocker entirely.
  3. Trusted Sites (IE Only)
Just for Internet Explorer users! You have to make westlaw.com a “trusted site.” To do so:
    - Go to Tools
    - Internet Option
    - Security
    - Trusted Sites
    - Sites
    - uncheck the “Require server verification (https://) box
    - Type in *.westlaw.com. Then click Add.

Curing the LexisNexis Login and Registration Blues

August 29th, 2008

LexisNexis is having a few start-of-the-term difficulties. Here are cures for the two bugs affecting some users:

1. Logging In to LexisNexis

Folks have been having difficulties logging into LexisNexis via their new law school portal. Here is an alternative entry to LexisNexis that should be free of those problems:

www.lexis.com/research

Only the entry screen is different. Once logged in your will see the standard law school version of LexisNexis.

2. Registering New IDs

If you are having any issues registering your ID, the odds are you are using Internet Explorer. LexisNexis recommends trying to register on either Firefox of Safari.

Don’t have either of those? Firefox is available on the computer lab pcs, as well as on the Legal Research Stations behind the reference desk in the library. Feel free to register using one of those computers; thereafter you should be able to have full LexisNexis access on IE.

Wireless Glitch

August 26th, 2008

[ed. note: The library has network cords you can borrow. Just ask at the main circulation desk]

Message from Computing Services, 8/26/2008

There’s been an unexpected temporary glitch in the wireless network, which is regrettably causing some students not to be able to access our wireless network this week. We are working now to resolve the issue and hope to have full wireless network access reestablished campus wide no later than Thursday afternoon. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

In the meantime, you may use any ethernet-wired port in the study areas and in the classrooms (if they have wired ethernet ports).

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience with the issue.

1L IDs Now Available

CALI DVDs Arriving Soon to a Mailbox Near You

August 21st, 2008

Good news – for the first time in living memory every student at our law school will be receiving their very own DVD full of CALI lessons. First year students will be getting their DVDs full of interactive lessons at their Legal Research classes. 2L – 4Ls, LL.Ms, new visitors, transfers, and even the occasional 5L will find a CALI DVD in their campus mailbox the first week of classes.

CALI Lessons
If you’re unfamiliar with them, CALI lessons are free, interactive, computer-based tutorials distributed by the non-profit Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction.

CALI publishes over 700 CALI lessons in 32 different legal subject areas. All law students at CALI member schools, including ours, have free, unlimited access to CALI lessons. Law students around the country ran CALI lessons over 900,000 times last school year. Created by law faculty and librarians nationwide, CALI lessons make for a great, alternative way to study.

CALI Online
Can’t wait for the DVD? No worries – you can start learning the law via the CALI lessons right now, online.

Just go to our CALI Info Page. There you will find links to CALI, registration instructions, and the all important authorization code. You cannot register without it. Just click the “Get the Authorization Code” link (then you’ll need to enter your L&C email username and password), or stop by the Boley Reference Desk and ask for the code there. We’ll be handing those out as well.

Login Troubles Fixed

August 18th, 2008

Update: We have the site running again. You should have no more troubles logging into the various L&C Law students, faculty & staff sections of our site.

We are having a bit of technical difficulty with our pages requiring logging in. So, if you are having trouble logging in to parts of our site, whether it be past-year exams, databases from off-site, faculty materials, etc., don’t change your password. It’s us; not you.

However, these pages should all be working by early this afternoon. Come back and try to log in again soon.

Thanks for your patience.
