New Summit System for Borrowing Books and Media
November 12th, 2008Summit, the system you use to borrow books and media from 36 academic libraries in the Northwest, is upgrading to a new system and a new look on December 1st. Summit is an extremely popular service because books and media requested through Summit are delivered to the Law Library within a few days.
That service will remain the same, but there will be some changes:
A Larger Database
The new Summit system is integrated with the WorldCat database, so you will have easier access to more than 100 million items from libraries around the world.
The Look and Functionality
- Search and results screens are streamlined and it’s easier to refine your search results.
- With one search Summit will prioritize your results so that:
- The first items displayed are held by Summit libraries (with the usual 2-3 day delivery).
- The remaining items are from libraries across the globe (these items may take 1-2 weeks to arrive and loan periods will vary).
- All of your results will have obvious links that make it easy to initiate your requests.
Loan Periods and Renewals
To facilitate the transition to the new Summit system:
- All books checked out between November 18 – December 1 will have a due date of December 12, 2008.
- Books checked out after December 1st will be loaned for 6 weeks, no renewals.
- Media checked out after December 1st will be loaned for the usual 3 days, no renewals.
- Initially there will be no renewals, but that capability may be restored in coming months.
During new Summit’s initial phase, you will need to look in two places to see what you have checked out. Items from Boley Law Library and Watzek Library will show in your library account. Items checked out from other libraries will show in the new Summit interface. This inconvenience will be corrected as soon as possible.
More Information
Improvements to the new Summit system will continue through early 2009. Read all the details at the official Questions and Answers about the New Summit page.
