Westlaw Opening Multitude of Pages: Here’s the Fix

August 26th, 2009

We’ve run into a bug with Westlaw that starts opening a seemingly endless (until your computer crashes, that is) number of windows as soon as you login to your Westlaw (or TWEN) account.

This problem is only affecting folks using Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista. Windows XP and Mac OS X do not seem to be affected, and neither do IE 6 nor 8.

Here is the quick fix:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click Tools – Internet Options
  • Choose the Security Tab
  • Click the Internet Zone
    - Be sure the “Enable Protected Mode” check box is checked
  • Click the Trusted Sites Zone
    - Be sure the “Enable Protected Mode” check box is checked
  • Click OK

While you are in there, be sure to also make sure that you’ve checked your cookies (all browsers), pop-up blocker (all browsers), trusted sites (IE only), and download (IE only) settings. Otherwise you may not be able to print, download, or even view PDFs on Westlaw.

Go to our Fixing PDF Problems and Printing/Downloading Settings for Westlaw for easy instructions.

Westlaw/TWEN and LexisNexis Passwords

August 18th, 2009

Tis the time of year that we get lots of early questions about where and when students can pick up passwords for Westlaw/TWEN and LexisNexis. Here are the answers:

  • 1Ls, new transfer and visiting students will all receive both Westlaw/TWEN and LexisNexis passwords in their orientation packets. We highly recommend that you go ahead and register them as soon as you can. You’ll create your own username and password for both.
  • LL.M students can pick up passwords from Lin Harmon.
  • Any continuing students who don’t have a Westlaw/TWEN and/or LexisNexis password can stop by the reference desk in the law library. We’ll have password cards starting Friday, August 21.

Finally, if you cannot remember your username or password, check out our lost password info page.
