In this webcast, the American Civil Liberties Union and National Lawyers Guild student groups host a panel discussion focused on issues related to law enforcement.

Jo Ann Hardesty and Ashlee Albies discuss their work related to the Portland Police Department. In particular, they share their experiences with community oversight and legal challenges to improper police practices, including racial profiling and excessive use of force.

Jo Ann Hardesty is a long-time voice for Portland's under-represented communities and a leader in the struggle against racial and economic injustice, and was three times elected to the Oregon legislature and for many years Executive Director of Oregon Action. She’s been called on by the City of Portland to serve on the City Charter Commission, but her passion is organizing those on the downside of power to pursue their interests from the local to the federal level.

J. Ashlee Albies’s legal practice focuses on civil rights and employee-side employment law. She is cAmeo-chair of the Portland chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, a progressive bar association with nationwide membership, and periodically sits on its national executive board.  Ashlee is the Chair of the Oregon State Bar Civil Rights Committee, and sits on the Steering Committee of the Albina Ministerial Alliance Coalition for Justice and Police Reform.

Knowledge of diversity issues is a core tenet of service to clients. In this webcast, local attorneys talk about preconceptions that clients and attorneys both bring to the table, and how knowledge of diverse perspectives, privileges and biases is important to attorneys’ professional conduct.

Kevin Clonts works for Rizzo Mattingly Bosworth doing complex litigation on construction and insurance matters.  He is the chair of OGALLA: The Gay and Lesbian Bar Association.

Chris Ling works for Cartwright Whitman Baer doing litigation on complex estate matters.  He also has experience in construction and personal injury litigation.  He is the co-chair of the Oregon Minority Lawyers Association (OMLA).

Parna Mehrbani is a partner at Lane Powell and works in intellectual property.  She has presented on topics such as electronic discovery, negotiating complex license and business agreements and security and privacy law, to name a few.  She also mentors law students and new attorneys, and does a great deal of pro bono work.

Ramón A. Pagán is a criminal defense attorney. He is the president of the Oregon Hispanic Bar Association.
