Boley Blog: New Faces at Boley Law Library

Get to know the two newest employees at Boley Law Library: Brian Hulsey and Sarah Hunsberger.

Brian and Sarah join Sarah Johnson, Associate Director of Collections and Access, and Liana Rein, Serials and Acquisitions Specialist, to make up the Collections and Access (C&A) team at Boley Law Library. C&A manages the library's print and online collections, the library catalog, digital collections and website, purchasing, and donations. They also handle access services including borrowing, interlibrary loan, and access to study spaces. The team specializes in making materials in the library discoverable in the catalog and on the shelf. All of our great student employees are also part of C&A.

The Boley Blog asked Brian (BH) and Sarah (SH) the following questions, so read on to learn more about them, what they do at the library, what they like to do for fun, and their favorite places to eat in Portland.

Tell us a little about your background/schooling.

(BH) I have a B.M. in Musicology from DePaul University in Chicago, an M.L.I.S. from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS, and a Project Management Professional Certification from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA.

(SH) I have a bachelor's degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Chicago.

Where have you worked prior to Boley?

(BH) Before joining the Boley Law Library, I served as the Learning Commons Coordinator for Georgia Southern University and Access Manager for the Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries.

(SH) Most recently I worked as a library assistant and a writing tutor at Clackamas Community College. I've also worked as a newspaper reporter, newspaper copy editor, online writing coach, radio newscaster, volunteer breastfeeding counselor, music store clerk, pie slicer, and corn detasseler.

What do you do at Boley, what is your job description or title?

(BH) I am the Circulation and Resource Sharing Specialist. That title means that I am responsible for access services, supervising the circulation assistant staff, interlibrary loan and Summit fulfillment, and maintaining the course reserve collection.

(SH) My job title is Acquisitions and Circulation Specialist. I am responsible for ordering new library materials, administering the law library's digital repository, and providing support for circulation. You may see me at the front desk a lot as much of the library staff continues to work from home.

What’s your favorite restaurant in the Portland area?

(BH) The Bye and Bye is my favorite eatery so far because of its extensive vegan menu options. I suggest the Weeping Tiger sandwich: Tofu cutlets, lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, jalapeño, Sriracha, and miso mayo - YUM! 

(SH) Saburo's.

Favorite place to travel?

(BH) I adore wilderness/tent camping in Northwestern Washington and British Columbia.

(SH) Northern New Mexico.

Best book you’ve read in the last year (or five years)?

(BH) I adored the Pulitzer-winning, Less by Andrew Sean Greer. It is a brilliant novel, with exceptional writing and a depth of character rarely seen in humor/romance fiction. Additionally, it is one of the most satisfying queer love stories I've ever read - I might have cried a little at the ending. 

(SH) I finally finished Moby-Dick.

What are you looking forward to the most with your new position at Boley?

(BH) Getting to know, and helping the Lewis & Clark Law School community with all their Summit or interlibrary loan needs. 

(SH) Getting to know the students, staff and faculty.

Tea or coffee?

(BH) I am mainly a coffee person; however, I occasionally enjoy a good cuppa builders tea.

(SH) Coffee, obviously.

Answer to a question you wish someone would ask you.

(SH) What is your favorite thing about living in Oregon?
The Oregon Coast. I grew up on a farm in the Midwest and had never seen the ocean until I moved to Oregon as a young adult. Every time I go back, it is still just as magical as when I caught that first glimpse.
