Join Professor Tung Yin as he discusses his new book, National Security Lies, with moderator Professor John Parry. Book launch and discussion will be held in the Boley Law Library atrium at 12:10PM on Monday, April 14th. The library will also serve light refreshments and there will be an opportunity for questions with the author.
This thought-provoking book details the national security lies told by presidents of the United States throughout history, both to Congress and to the public. Professor Tung Yin explains how current laws do not set up sufficient prevention measures and proposes legislative reform to regulate such lies.
Critical acclaim for the book states:
‘Tung Yin has deftly cataloged a taxonomy of national security lies in support of his argument that the corrosive impacts of presidential lies and misrepresentations may be managed and even minimized by requiring that the misstatements be reported in writing to select members of Congress within a reasonable time. Yin borrows from the law of covert action while he fairly characterizes a series of presidential lies as sometimes essential and at other times arguably harmful to our national security.’

‘In this provocative new book, Tung Yin explains why Jack Nicholson may have been right in A Few Good Men after all: ‟You can’t handle the truth!” Sometimes, Yin explains, it may be defensible for the government to conceal truths about national security from the public. Yin addresses the fundamental tension between the protection of national security and government transparency, and proposes legal and political mechanisms to police the line between the two. This will be a welcome addition to the libraries of all those who work, think, and write in the field of national security.’
