Research Refresher: Jury Instructions

Guide to refresh your research skills before a summer job or attorney position.

Jury Instructions

Drawing from a newspaper of a juryIn many states, there are official jury instructions that must be used in trial; in other states, there are model jury instructions that are suggestions for attorneys to propose to the judge to be given to the jury.

In Oregon, we have Uniform Jury Instructions for both civil and criminal cases. As noted in Oregon BarBooks, "These instructions are used by most judges in Oregon courts and by counsel throughout the state."

Oregon's Uniform Jury Instructions are available on Oregon BarBooks, and through Bloomberg, Lexis, and Westlaw.

To locate another state's jury instructions:

On Lexis: Explore Content -> Content Type -> Jury Instructions

On Westlaw: Content Types -> Secondary Sources -> Jury Instructions
