Just Fodder: The Ethics of Feeding Animals
by
Animal lovers who feed meat to other animals are faced with a paradox: perhaps fewer animals would be harmed if they stopped feeding the animals they love. Animal diets do not raise problems merely for individuals. To address environmental crises, health threats, and harm to animals, we must change our food systems and practices. But in these systems, animals, too, are eaters. Moving beyond what humans should eat and whether to count animals as food, Just Fodder answers ethical and political questions arising from thinking about animals as eaters rather than as food. Josh Milburn begins with practical dilemmas about feeding the animals closest to us, our pets or animal companions. Worse Than Nothing: The Dangerous Fallacy of Originalism

Originalism, the view that the meaning of a constitutional provision is fixed when it is adopted, was once the fringe theory of a few extremely conservative legal scholars but is now a well-accepted mode of constitutional interpretation. Three of the Supreme Court's nine justices explicitly embrace the originalist approach, as do increasing numbers of judges in the lower courts. Noted legal scholar Erwin Chemerinsky gives a comprehensive analysis of the problems that make originalism unworkable as a method of constitutional interpretation. He argues that the framers themselves never intended constitutional interpretation to be inflexible and shows how it is often impossible to know what the "original intent" of any particular provision was. Perhaps worst of all, though its supporters tout it as a politically neutral and objective method, originalist interpretation tends to disappear when its results fail to conform to modern conservative ideology.

Sex Is As Sex Does: Governing Transgender Identity

In this book, the author shows that the misclassification of transgender people, a phenomenon usually thought to be the result of transphobia, was in the past often deeply connected to systems that ensure the legal oppression of women. With the gradual disestablishment of gender from the state, barriers to sex reclassification began to crumble and contradictions in sex reclassification policies emerged-one state actor determining that sex classification is inalterably determined at birth, another demanding gender confirming surgery, a third requiring only an avowal of gender identity. While trans advocates attempt to rectify the injustice by talking about what sex and gender really are, the author demonstrates that policymakers have often been more concerned with what sex does for a particular state project. Sometimes it has been a tool for nation-building, as in marriage law; sometimes it has been a tool for affirming identity or tracking individuals, as in identity documents. Setting aside debates about "the correct" definitions of sex and gender, he examines how sex has been put to work as a mobile technology of governing. The book also illustrates how, in the current climate, sex reclassification has been weaponized by the right.

Once home to the United States's largest plutonium production site, the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state is laced with 56 million gallons of radioactive waste. This volume tracks 13,000 years of environmental and cultural change in North Warner Valley, Oregon. Though other parts of the Oregon Desert have been studied by scientists for almost a century, North Warner Valley largely escaped researchers' attention until recently. A decade of fieldwork and laboratory analyses has revealed a record of human activity that waxed and waned with local and regional environmental and social change. The studies of the landscape, lithic technology, plant and animal foods, and bone and shell objects presented in the volume, which come mostly from a stratified rock shelter record that spans almost ten millennia but also dozens of open-air sites, tell a story of people-most often families-who visited North Warner Valley periodically to collect marsh plants, rabbits, and other resources. Those people had ties to groups living in northwestern Nevada, central Oregon, and even the Pacific Coast. Smith and colleagues present their work in a way that allows readers to not only understand how people adapted to local change but also how North Warner Valley fit into the complex mosaic of pre-contact history in the American West that began during the late Pleistocene and continued until recent times. Worse Than Nothing: The Dangerous Fallacy of Originalism

Originalism, the view that the meaning of a constitutional provision is fixed when it is adopted, was once the fringe theory of a few extremely conservative legal scholars but is now a well-accepted mode of constitutional interpretation. Three of the Supreme Court's nine justices explicitly embrace the originalist approach, as do increasing numbers of judges in the lower courts. Noted legal scholar Erwin Chemerinsky gives a comprehensive analysis of the problems that make originalism unworkable as a method of constitutional interpretation. He argues that the framers themselves never intended constitutional interpretation to be inflexible and shows how it is often impossible to know what the "original intent" of any particular provision was. Perhaps worst of all, though its supporters tout it as a politically neutral and objective method, originalist interpretation tends to disappear when its results fail to conform to modern conservative ideology.

Sex Is As Sex Does: Governing Transgender Identity

In this book, the author shows that the misclassification of transgender people, a phenomenon usually thought to be the result of transphobia, was in the past often deeply connected to systems that ensure the legal oppression of women. With the gradual disestablishment of gender from the state, barriers to sex reclassification began to crumble and contradictions in sex reclassification policies emerged-one state actor determining that sex classification is inalterably determined at birth, another demanding gender confirming surgery, a third requiring only an avowal of gender identity. While trans advocates attempt to rectify the injustice by talking about what sex and gender really are, the author demonstrates that policymakers have often been more concerned with what sex does for a particular state project. Sometimes it has been a tool for nation-building, as in marriage law; sometimes it has been a tool for affirming identity or tracking individuals, as in identity documents. Setting aside debates about "the correct" definitions of sex and gender, he examines how sex has been put to work as a mobile technology of governing. The book also illustrates how, in the current climate, sex reclassification has been weaponized by the right.
